Singer's Sore Throat Recovery

Some of the most common questions I am asked by my vocal students... "What should I do if I have a sore throat?  Should I sing? Will it damage my voice? How do I recover?"  So here's the vocal coach's prescription for a sore throat:

  • Get plenty of rest!  8 to 9 hours a night.  Your body needs rest to boost your immune system and fight off sickness.
  • Drink a lot of water!  At least half your weight in ounces.  So if you weigh 125, you should drink 75 ounces a day.  Make sure you are drinking spring water, or some type of purified water.  Do not drink from your faucet!
  • Avoid caffeinated tea, coffee, cream or milk, and alcohol.
  • Take your vitamins!  Vitamin C is one of the most important supplements to help your body's immune system.  I also suggest taking magnesium, echinacea  and probiotics.
  • Try to refrain from violent coughing or clearing the throat as this can severely injure the vocal chords.  Using all natural throat lozenges or zinc tablets will help.
  • Steam it up!  Using hot water steam with some essential oils like peppermint, eucalyptus or tea tree will help moisten your sinuses and vocal chords.
  • DO NOT SING!  You will need time to allow the inflammation to subside.  If you can, avoid talking as well.  Vocal rest is best.
  • SEE A DOCTOR!  If you have symptoms for more than 3 days, I suggest seeing an ENT.  You may have strep or some other sickness that will not get better without antibiotics.  Make sure the doctor does the appropriate blood work and tests BEFORE you ever take an antibiotic!
  • DO DRINK decaf hot tea with real lemon juice and raw local honey.  I like Throat Coat Tea and Chamomile.
  • When your throat is feeling better, give me a call and I would love to help with your vocal recovery....starting slowly, to build up your voice.  Your rate of recovery depends greatly on your level of sickness and your experience as a singer. I
