Peace Like a River

I've got peace like a river in my soul.  Yeah, that is a great kid's song.  It has some really cool motions that go along with the lyrics.  Most days, I can sing it and mean it.  But there are times when I don't feel the peace that I love to sing about.  There are times when the problems of this world overwhelm me.  I find myself in a place where the river is raging and the rapids are about to take me under.  

I'm sure that as you read this, you are thinking of a time when you felt the exact same way.  Maybe you were hurt by a close friend who spoke unkind words in the heat of anger.  Maybe you were fired from your job.  Maybe you experienced the loss of someone very close.  All these things, along with the pressures of every day life, can get us into a funk and steal our joy and peace.  My friend, this is a dangerous place to be!  The enemy preys upon your weakness and doubt.  He gets a kick out of your depression and uses it to destroy your peace. Most of the time, we don't even realize it's happening until it's too late.   

So what should we do?  How do we prevent this from happening?  How do we find peace and joy if we've lost it?  Philippians 4:6-9 gives us insight into the answer:  "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you."

All the things in your life are of great concern to God.  He wants us to find peace by prayer, petition and thanksgiving.  Remember, through prayer, petition and thanksgiving,  we come into the presence of God. This is where He says we can find peace like a river.  God will renew our minds as we meditate on His word and present our requests with a spirit of thankfulness.
